Hello my social media friends and fellow Singaporeans, With the recent virus going on, it’s inevitable that the malls and restaurants are seeing less crowd since everyone is avoiding heading out unless necessary. Trust me when I say I know, cos my own business is also affected like mad. But that’s okay, for now I am doing more bakesale meet ups and looking on the bright side - at least now I have more time to spend with loved ones. Like my Ahlao. And my cooking pot. I am a HUGE fan of steamboat, especially Beauty In the Pot, Paradise please notice me!!! Wo hen ai ni! Of course I am a long time Paradise member (ever since their first outlet at Paya Lebar wtf) and of course I have been accumulating points lol. Having a BITP so near us at Vivo is really not helping hahaha. BUT, I also enjoy having simple steamboat at the comfort of my own home, especially now when my purse strings are kind of tighter. Here’s how you can have a pretty satisfying steamboat for TWO, for less than $10! I ordered all my groceries from Redmart. It’s convenient and also great cos I can earn rebates (I’m a LiveUp member)! I highly recommend Redmart if you want to buy groceries online but guys, remember, be gracious, please don’t hoard! Here are my favourite steamboat staples, with the brands and prices listed so you can have a clearer look! I also took time to do some calculations so you know the unit price PER portion. That hurt my brain a little bit, but you’re welcome. All items ordered from Redmart unless otherwise stated.
Pork collar slices from The Cellar Door $5.9 for 400g You get about 20+ slices, and that makes 4 portions. Per portion: $1.475 Beef slices from Sadia $6.95 for 400g You get about 20+ slices, and that makes 4 portions. Per portion: $1.74 Chicken fillet from Perdigao $5.6 for 1kg You get about 10+ fillets, and that makes 7 portions. Do note that you have to slice them into smaller pieces for easy cooking. Per portion: $0.789 Pork chive dumplings from Lele $4 for 400g You get about 20 pieces, and that makes 5 portions. Per portion: $0.80 Spring onion from GIVVO $2.15 for 200g Based on my personal consumption (cos I’m crazy about spring onions), this is only about 3 portions lolol. Per portion: $$0.716 Roasted sesame sauce from Kewpie $16.50 for 1000ml This takes FOREVER to finish cos it’s a huge bottle. For steamboat dipping sauce, we just use about 20ml I guess? Per portion: $0.80 Garlic $1.35 for 200g You get about 5 bulbs, and that makes 10 portions, since we only use half a bulb each time. I insist on fresh garlic when we mince them for dumplings. For the usual cooking and stir frying, I always use pre-minced garlic from a tub! Per portion: $0.15 Dark soy sauce $1.75 for 320ml We only used about a spoon of sauce, then add soup to dilute, so I guess 10ml? Per portion: $0.054 Soup base cooked with fish bones from 9S Seafood, oil, salt, white pepper and water. First I stir fry the fish bones with some oil, salt and white pepper until fragrant. After that’s done, you can boil them over the stove until white and murky, or dump everything in the pressure cooker and use the soup mode. Of course cooking over stove will give the soup a better flavour cos you can control how ‘melted’ you want the bones to be. About $18 for the whole batch, which makes about 15 portions. I usually portion and keep them in small plastic containers and freeze for future use.. They can be easily defrosted overnight in the fridge, or in the microwave in 5 mins. I don’t know the exact price breakdown of the whole batch, but let’s say with water, gas and electricity bills for the whole meal, per portion of soup base comes up to about $1.30. So your whole meal would cost a total of $8.31! FOR TWO PAX!! This cost is based on our portion size (as seen in the photos), but feel free to up your budget and include more fancy stuff if you want! We ran out of fried beancurd rolls and ee mian at home this time, that’s why we had more meat. But even if you were to add on the rolls or noodles, trust me I sumpa the cost still within $10. This is why I love home cooked meals! Cheap and good. Feel free to share the post with your steamboat-loving friends! Till next time, missgoob <3
